Een van de mooiste plekken op het eiland Sao Miguel vind je bij het dorpje en meer Sete Cidades. Het meer ligt in het westen van het eiland en bestaat uit twee delen, een groen en een blauw meer. Toch moet je niet alleen direct naar het dorpje aan het water of het meer gaan als je Sete Cidades bezoekt, juist de uitzichtpunten rondom het meer maken dit deel van Sao Miguel zo spectaculair. Een van de meest gefotografeerde plekken op Sao Miguel vind je bijvoorbeeld bij het uitzichtpunt nabij het meer Lagoa do Canario dat in de omgeving van Sete Cidades ligt, dit uitzichtpunt wordt Miradouro da Boca do Inferno genoemd. Het mooiste uitzicht op Sete Cidades: Miradouro Boca do Inferno nabij Lagoa do Canario
Je passeert hetkleine meer Lagoa do Canario, dat omringd wordtdoor hoge bomen die weerspiegelen in het water, als je vanuit Ponta Delgada naar Sete Cidades rijdt. Wij dachten in eerste instantie dat Lagoa do Canario zelf dé highlight was op deze plek, maar als je door de toegangspoort wat dieper het bos in rijdt dan ontdek je pas echt waarom het hier zo druk is. Opeen gegeven moment vind je verder in het bos een pad entrap omhoog. Klim die helemaal op en eenmaal op de top vind je een van de meest spectaculaire uitzichten van de Azoren. Het vergezicht vanafMiradouro da Boca do Inferno is bloedmooi en misschien wel de mooistop Sao Miguel. Een ander mooi viewpoint op het meer vind je bij de Vista do Rei (King’s View) Lookout en bij Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras.

Rondom Sete Cidades is een volledig verlaten hotel te vinden. Het verhaal gaat dat de eigenaar op een gegeven moment geldproblemen had en het om die reden moest sluiten. Hij liet het hotel voor lange tijd bewaken, maar toen ook de bewaker niet meer betaald kon worden stond het hotel echt leeg en kon iedereen erin. Je kan begrijpen wat toen is gebeurd: Bewoners van Sao Miguel kregen door dat het hotel verlaten was en besloten langzaamaan alles mee te nemen wat nog bruikbaar was. Bedden, lampen, liften, trapleuningen, meubels en ander hotelspul. Alles verdween uit het nu zogenoemde Abandoned Hotel van Sete Cidades. Je kan het hotel tegenwoordig nog steeds bezoeken, maar verwacht geen spullen meer. Het is echt een karkas van een hotel waar je nu doorheen loopt. Het heeft niet alleen iets mysterieus en spannends om even naar binnen te gaan, ook het uitzicht van de hotelkamers van de bovenste verdieping is heel gaaf om te zien. Je hebt bijna het gevoel alsof je naar een natuurlijk en levend schilderij kijkt, zo mooi is het uitzicht. Je vindt dit hotel bij Miradouro da Vista do Rei. Lees hier meer over het verlaten hotel

Kayakingop het blauwe en groene meer van Sete Cidades
Rij je helemaal naar beneden naar het meer van Sete Cidades, dan kun je aan het water heerlijk chillen bij eenvan de terrassen, hikes maken in de omgeving of een uurtje aan kayaking doen! Er worden op verschillende plekken kayaks verhuurd en wij zijn met de kayaks van Futurismo op pad gegaan. Via de lange houten pier stap je in je kayaken vanuit daar kun je in een klein half uur richting het groene meer varen door onder de brug door te kayakken die de twee meren van elkaar scheidt. Ook is het tof (als je een uurtje de tijd hebt) om nog even naar het schiereiland te kayakken, als je namelijk het hele meer wilt zien gaat je dat al gauw twee tot drie uur kosten.

Hoe is het blauw-groene meer van Sete Cidades ontstaan?
Leuk om te weten is dat het meer van Sete Cidades een kratermeer is. Het is een zoetwater meer en een van de grootste van de hele Azoren. Dat de twee meren van kleur verschillen komt doordat het twee ecologisch verschillende meren zijn. Beide zijn gewoon met elkaar verbonden, maar worden ogenschijnlijk van elkaar gescheiden door de brug van Sete Cidades. Ondanks dat Sete Cidades wel degelijk uit één meer bestaathebben de twee delen weleen andere naam, die zijn heel toepasselijk Lagoa Verde en Lagoa Azul. Er zijn ook eeuwenoude legendes en verhalen over het meer te vinden, zo wordt wel eens gezegd dat de meren zijn ontstaan door de tranen van een herder en een prinses omdat hun liefde verboden werd. Het dorpje van Sete Cidades vind je trouwens aan de westelijke kant van het meer.

Praktische tips voor als je naar Sete Cidades gaat
Hieronder vind je een aantal veelgestelde vragen rondom Sete Cidades, je kan de vragen open klikken en zo het antwoord bekijken. Oh en zoek je leuke plekken om te overnachten in de buurt van Sete Cidades? Check dan eens de tripjes van Eliza was here, die hebben ook vaak hele leuke accommodaties.
Waar vind je in Sete Cidades een leuk restaurant?
Er zijn een handjevol restaurants te vinden in Sete Cidades, allemaal prima en redelijk simpel. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de restaurantjes St. Nicolau of Lagoa Azul en Green Love Restaurant. Wij hebben uiteindelijk een koffietje gedronken en een kleine hap gehaald bij Green Love Restaurant. Deze plek zit ook lekker dicht bij Futurismo waar je kayaks kan huren en je zit vrijwel direct aan het meer. Duur is het trouwens ook niet, net als in de rest van de Azoren betaal je vrijwel niks voor een koffie met melk en een goed bord eten. Voor 8,- a 12,- euro kun je uitgebreid lunchen.
Hoe is het weer bij Sete Cidades
Het weer kan nogal onregelmatig zijn in Sao Miguel en daardoor ook bij Sete Cidades. Waar het de ene week volop kan regenen is het de volgende week super zonnig. Er is dus niet echt een pijl op te trekken. Ook kan het opeens flink waaien bij het meer mede door alle omliggende bergen, dus als je gaat kajakken is ook dat iets om rekening mee te houden.
Is het ver rijden naar Sete Cidades vanaf Ponta Delgada?
Met de auto ben je ongeveer 40 minuten aan het rijden van Ponta Delgada naar Sete Cidades. Onderweg zul je echter al wat toffe highlights tegenkomen, dus neem voldoende tijd om ook zo nu en dan ergens te stoppen. Hierdoor ben je waarschijnlijk ook langer onderweg.
Zijn er nog bezienswaardigheden in het dorp zelf?
Het dorpje zelf bestaat uit een aantal kleine straatjes en je rijdt er eigenlijk vrij gauw doorheen. Toch is er wel een bezienswaardigheid die je niet mag missen en dat is de São Nicolau Church. Een mooi kerkje met lange toegangsweg met bomen aan weerszijde.
Wij sliepen zelf in Ponta Delgada toen we naar Sete Cidades gingen, maar bij het meer zelf zijn ook hotels te vinden. Je kan bijvoorbeeld overnachten in de prachtige huisjes van 7 Cidades Lake Lodge. Dit zijn moderne houten huisje die onwijs tof zijn ingericht, dichtbij / aan het meer. Verder kun je kiezen voor Casa Dos Platanos of voor Lake Cottage Azores. Ook schijnt er bij Sete Cidades een groot open camping veld te zijn met een klein toilet huisje, maar dit wordt niet echt beheert en we hebben het zelf niet meteen gespot toen we er waren. Slaap je liever in een Airbnb? Rondom Sete Cidades zijn verschillende vakantiewoningen te vinden, dus daar kun je ook zeker zoeken voor een mooie overnachting. Als je je via hier aanmeldt bij Airbnb krijg je bovendien van ons rond de 30 euro korting!
Waar kun je toffe hiking trails vinden?
Er zijn verschillende hiking trails te vinden rondom het meer, de een is makkelijker dan de ander en ook verschillen ze qua lengte. Tijdens de meeste hikes kom je uiteindelijk ook langs de mooiste miradouro’s / viewpoints. Je kande verschillende hiking trailsvinden op de website van VisitAzores.com.
Welke miradouro's moet je zeker niet missen?
Er zijn eigenlijk drie uitzichtpunten die je zeker niet moet overslaan als je naar Sete Cidades gaat. Dit zijn Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras, vanaf dit punt zit je al wat dichter bij het meer maar het uitzicht is alsnog waanzinnig om te zien. Verder moet je natuurlijk naar Miradouro Boca do Inferno nabij Lagoa do Canario. Dit vonden wij het mooiste uitzichtpunt van heel Sao Miguel.
