What is the Lumea BRI956?
The Lumea BRI956 is part of the Philips Lumea Prestige range of IPL devices. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL for short). The Philips Lumea devices are designed to reduce hair growth by up to 92%. It is marketed as a permanent way to remove body hair at home. Whilst it’s highly effective its important to remember that there is no way to permanently remove unwanted body hair. Since the reduction in body hair regrowth is so effective, it can feel as if it’s permanent!
Main Features of Lumea BRI956

The Lumea Prestige BRI956 boasts the same impressive features as the Lumea Prestige range:

- SenseIQ technology for personised hair removal
- 4 Intelligent Attachments
- suitable for a wide range of body parts
- 6 months of hair free smooth skin
- 100% satisfaction guaranteed
- Use corded and cordless
The main differences between BI956 compared to the Philips Lumea Prestige range.
The only difference between the Philips Lumea BI956 and any of the other models in the range is quite simply the attachments. This model comes with four specially designed attachments which is currently the highest number of attachments in the range. Each attachment is designed to be used on their designated body part. They are specifically curved to improve the effectiveness of contact between the device and your skin.
Body

The main attachment of all Philips Lumea Prestige devices is the body attachment. This device is suitable for arms and legs. It is curvey slightly in order to fit those tricky areas such as knees, elbows and ankles.
The main feature of all the Philips Lumea range is the Philips SmartSkin sensor. This will measure your skin tone and hair contrast on each body part that you use the device on. This Smart Sensor will then advise on the perfect setting to use for optimal hair reduction.
Since arms and legs are the most time-consuming body part Philips designed the body attachment to have just a slight curve in order to speed up the process. I always put aside plenty of time when concentrating on my arms and legs. It’s useful to know that whilst the device can be used cordless, it recharges much quicker when it is plugged in.
Plugging in the device also gives you access to the higher pulse settings. These higher settings are usually tolerated better on the arms and legs,
Face

Not all hair removal brands are gentle enough to be used on the face. This is a real bonus feature of the Philips Lumea Prestige range! The face attachment has a smaller contact screen making it easier to use on the face such as lip and chin areas,
The facial attachment also has an extra filter that helps protect the sensitive skin of the face from light pulses, I love how Philips has thought of everything! The Lumea Prestige range was actually developed with dermatologists to ensure that it is gentle but effective on body and facial hair.
Philips report that 84% of women who used the Philips Lumea BI954 facial attachment were satisfied with the hair reduction on their face.
Underarms
The Philips BI956 has a separate attachment for the underarm area opposed to the “precision” attachment which is offered with some of the other models. The underarm attachment has been designed to closely fit the underarm area and the attachment has a 3 cm by 2 cm window for close skin contact.
The attachment itself is a medium-sized slightly curved attachment and isn’t too heavy when attached to the device. When you attach it to the BR1956 device, the specially tailored underarm program is activated ensuring you get the best results possible!
Bikini

The bikini attachment is unique to the Lumea BRI956 and is designed to fit the curves around the bikini area. It is also fitted with an extra-light filter to protect intimate areas from the light pulses involved in IPL.
Philips report that 78% of women using the bikini attachment were satisfied with their hair reduction around the bikini area.
It’s important to note that the bikini attachment (or indeed any IPL device) should not be used directly on the genital region or inside the body.
Whether you prefer the two separate attachments for underarms and bikini over the precision attachment comes down really to personal choice. I own this model and it is by far my favourite out of the range. I prefer having specific areas for each body part but the cost and personal preference play a big part in choosing the right model for you.
Will it work for me?
IPL devices work by utilising the contrast between skin tone and hair colour. All IPL devices work this way, however, the Philips Lumea range has one of the broadest hair types and skin tones combinations currently available.
No IPL device (including the Philips Lumea range) work on white, grey, light blonde or red hair. They are also unable to work on very dark skin.
The Lumea Prestige range is my favourite IPL device and I’ve had some truly amazing results from it. You can read more about my experience in my article on the Philips Lumea Prestige range.
Is IPL permanent?

No, IPL is not permanent, no matter what make or model device you buy. Whilst it’s a sad fact of life, the reason people think they are a permanent way to remove hair is due to the fact they reduce body hair regrowth.
The Lumea Prestige range is so effective, it often feels like I have removed my unwanted body hair permanently! Since no IPL device offers actual permanent hair removal it means that if you stop using the device, your body hair will grow back exactly as it was before you started the treatment.
Whilst the Philips Lumea Prestige range isn’t permanent, it does change the way in which your hair regrows. Before the treatment, my body hair was dark, coarse and really thick. I had to shave almost daily in order to keep it in check.
Now after using the device, my body hair is fine, light and has stopped growing completely in places. I’m very happy with the results!
Can be used cordless
Want to reach those hard to reach areas with your device but the cord won’t reach that long? Say goodbye to all that drama thanks to the Lumea Prestige range being cordless!
It might not seem like a big deal to someone who has never used an IPL device before but trust me – as a seasoned pro at IPL it is a godsend!
Disadvantages of using the devices cordless are that the device doesn’t charge as fast and the highest settings cant be used.
Advantages are that I never use it cordless on big body areas so the higher settings and fast charging aspects really aren’t an issue for me.
Which model is best for me?
All the models in the Philips Lumea range are effective and all boast some pretty impressive figures for hair reduction – 78% on legs, 64% on bikini and 65% on armpits hair reduction after 12 treatments.

Conclusion
The Lumea BI956 is the best model in my opinion from the Lumea Prestige range. It has all four attachments making it perfect for having specific treatment days for each body part (like I do)
It’s the most expensive in the range and is just as effective as all the other models. If your still not sure which model is right is the right one for you then check out the other models available in the range.
